By now we have all heard about these delicious little baked ham slider sandwiches. Some of the recipes for these have up to 1 cup of butter for 12 little sandwiches. Holidays or not- for me that’s a bit much. My Healthier Hot Ham and Cheese Baked Sliders have all the flavor you love without all of the heavy butter. You honestly won’t miss a thing and they aren’t as messy.
As you can see from the photo, there is still plenty of topping. In fact as I make these I wonder how one gets all that butter to soak in using double the amount! This is honestly a case where my healthier version is the one I prefer.
What Kind of ham do you use for Healthier Hot Ham and Cheese Baked Sliders?
I like to use Boars Head Brand Tavern ham. It has a nice salty balanced flavor. A strong smoked or sweet flavor would compete with the seasonings in the topping. I also like to get the ham shaved. You want a ham with a mild flavor like this so you taste the seasoning you are brushing on top.
What is the best cheese for Baked Ham Sliders?
I think Swiss works best, but you could use provolone. I just wouldn’t use American or Cheddar. American would get too melty and cheddar might be overpowering to the other flavors.
Do I have to use Hawaiian Rolls for Ham Sliders?
You don’t! You could use any dinner size roll or even regular slider buns like you’d use for a burger. Most like the sweet roll with the salty ham, but that is really a preference thing.

A lighter take on those delicious ham and cheese sliders made with Kings Hawaiian Rolls. Less fat, but all the flavor!
- 12 Kings Hawaiian Rolls Left in a slab. Do not cut them individually.
- 1/2 lb Ham I recommend Boar's Head Tavern Ham.
- 6 slices Swiss Cheese Sargento Brand Ultra Thin or thin sliced from deli.
- 1/4 cup light butter Recommend-Land O Lakes Light Butter Spread
- 1/2 tbsp. Dijon mustard
- 1/2 tbsp. Poppy Seeds
- 1 tsp. Dried onion Found on spice aisle usually as dried minced onion.
- 1 tsp. Worcestershire sauce
- 1/4 tsp. Pepper
- 1/4 tsp. Salt
Using a serrated knife, cut the rolls in half lengthwise. This will give you the tops hooked together in one piece and the bottoms in one piece .
Line a 13x9 pan with a sheet of parchment . Lay the bottom half of the rolls down and spread the ham evenly over the rolls . Cover the ham with the cheese slices . Place the top onto the rolls .
Melt the butter in the microwave then stir in the mustard , poppy seeds , onion, Worcestershire, salt and pepper. Brush the top of the sandwiches with the butter mixture allowing it to soak in . The extra butter will run between the sandwiches .
Preheat the oven to 350 degrees. Cover the sandwiches with foil and allow your oven to preheat . This gives the sandwiches 10 minutes to soak in the butter mixture .
Bake the sandwiches covered for 20 minutes . Uncover and bake another 5.
Remove the sandwiches from the oven and allow to cool a bit before serving .
