Who doesn’t love chicken nuggets? If you have kids, chances are you’re paying high prices at the local grocery store for lower quality nuggets than you can make at home. These Homemade Baked chicken Nuggets are homemade nuggets you can feel proud of . They are made with ground chicken and some spices, rolled in bread crumbs and baked (or air fried!). It’s as easy as that!
Homemade Chicken Nuggets Tips
I like to use a baking sheet lined with parchment paper for best results. This is the best way to prevent sticking. These nuggets are seasoned simply with salt, black pepper, garlic powder and onion powder. If you are making them for adults, you could of course get crazier with seasonings.
I like to use already ground chicken breast for ease. You can use a food processor to grind up your own chicken breast. I wanted to keep this homemade chicken nugget recipe as easy as possible so I recommend the already ground chicken.
I do not recommend using things like chicken thighs. It just won’t lend well to the texture or be as lean. We are making healthy chicken nuggets here.
Another idea is to sneak veggies into your chicken mixture. You can very finely grate carrot or sweet potato to add some nutrition for those picky eaters.
These are cooked in the oven at high heat. I like to spray the tops with olive oil cooking spray to encourage browning. Panko breadcrumbs are also a must. If you do these in the air fryer, the parchment paper won’t be needed and we lower the temperature to 375. I still pray the tops to get that perfect golden color.
Cook these chicken nuggets until the internal temperature reaches 165 degrees.
These easy steps will yield great results every time.
Homemade Chicken Nuggets Substitutions and Variations
If you are gluten free, simply use gluten free panko. That’s pretty easy to find these days. You can season these however you like. You could even add a dash of cayenne for spicy nuggets.
Parmesan cheese and Italian seasoning is another flavor profile I’d try with this homemade version of chicken nuggets. Oh, and don’t forget to serve them with french fries and your favorite sauces.
Storing Leftovers
You can make these ground chicken nuggets to the point where you’d bake them and then freeze them on a sheet tray lined with parchment paper. Place them in a freezer bag and pull them out when you want chicken nuggets. Super simple. Just add a few minutes to the baking time.
You won’t need to buy those frozen nuggets anymore because you’ll be making your own 😉
Already cooked chicken nuggets can be placed in an airtight container and into the refrigerator for 3-4 days.
